This video was produced by Debbie (Lee) MacLeod, AVID's first tutor, for a course at the University of California, San Diego. Filmed in the first AVID classroom and featuring original AVID students, including AVID Board member Clarence Fields, the video outlines the purpose of AVID, selection process, student course requirements and tutorials. Students discuss their goals and the benefits of AVID. Howard Runk, AVID Counselor, discussed the counselor's role. AVID founder Mary Catherine Swanson explains AVID in relationship to educational issues. Since 2006, Debbie has been working with Mary Catherine and Archives Manager Laura Izuel on the AVID Archives, and serves as its webmaster. Native American AVID alumna and Gonzaga University student, Rita Helmbrecht, speaks at Sacramento's 2009 AVID Summer Institute. She shares the devastating emotional toll caused her by her drug addicted brother and the suicide of her alcoholic father and credits AVID and her mother for giving her the key to success.  Rita was the recipient of the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship. The first large AVID graduating class from San Diego State University in 1992— where almost no students of color were enrolled before AVID's first graduates in 1984—asked AVID founder Mary Catherine Swanson to be the commencement speaker. Swanson tells graduates that it is their responsibility to use their sphere of influence to ensure everyone has educational opportunities in order to preserve our tenuous democracy.
